Me va a encantar el siglo veintiuno

La cena se enfriaba. Los invitados, con la expectativa de que los encuentros
fuesen de la manera acostumbrada -rápidos, impersonales, azarosos-, estaban
tirados por los cuartos. Las papas estaban duras y las chauchas,
blandas. La carne... No había carne. El sol de invierno había
                         teñido de amarillo los olmos y las casas;
los ciervos iban calle abajo como refugiados; y en la entrada, los gatos
se estaban calentando en el capot de un auto. Un hombre, entonces,
vino y me dijo: "Aunque el pasado me encantaba, su oscuridad,
su peso que nada nos enseña, su pérdida, su todo
que no nos pide nada, me va a encantar aun más el siglo veintiuno,
porque en él veo a alguien en pantuflas y bata, pobre y de ojos marrones
que marcha por la nieve sin dejar detrás suyo ni siquiera una huella".
                        "Ah", dije yo poniéndome el sombrero. "Ah".

Dinner was getting cold. The guest, hoping for quick,
Impersonal random encounters of the usual sort, were sprawled
In the bedrooms. The potatoes were hard, the beans soft, the meat -
there not was the meat. The winter sun has turned the elms and houses yellow.
Deer were moving down the road like refugees; and in the driveway, cats
Were warming themselves on the hood car. Then a man turned.
And said to me: "Although I love the past, the dark of it,
The weight of it teaching us nothing, the loss of it, the all
Of it asking for nothing, I will love the twenty-first century more.
for in it I see someone in bathrobe and slippers, brown-eyed and poor,
walking throught snow without leaving so much as footprint behind".
"Oh", I said, putting my hat on, "Oh".
