Etna St. Vincent Millay / No, yo no me resigno













No, yo no me resigno a que los corazones amantes sean sepultados
en la compacta tierra. Así es y así será:
a la oscuridad van el cuerdo y el hermoso. Coronados
de lirios y laurel ellos van. Pero yo no me resigno.
Pensadores y amantes, ¡hundíos en la tierra!
Sed uno con el polvo sordo y nivelador.
Algo de lo que fuisteis y supisteis
debe quedar. Pero perdióse lo mejor.
Las rápidas respuestas, las miradas sinceras, el amor y sus risas,
todo se fue. Se fue y es alimento de las rosas.
Elegantes, rizadas son las flores. También son olorosas.
Lo sé, aunque no lo apruebo. Más bella era la luz que relucía
en tus ojos que todas las rosas de la tierra.
Hacia abajo, hacia abajo, en las tinieblas de la tumba,
van, poco a poco, el bello, el tierno y el hermoso.
Lentos van, el valiente, el sabio y el gracioso.
Lo sé, aunque no lo apruebo. Y no me resignaré nunca.

Dirge without Music
I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground./So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind:/Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned/With lilies and with laurel they go; but I am not resigned./Lovers and thinkers, into the earth with you./Be one with the dull, the indiscriminate dust./A fragment of what you felt, of what you knew,/A formula, a phrase remains, - but the best is lost.//The answers quick & keen, the honest look, the laughter, the love,/They are gone. They have gone to feed the roses. Elegant and curled/Is the blossom. Fragrant is the blossom. I know. But I do not approve./More precious was the light in your eyes than all the roses in the world.//Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave/Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;/Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave./I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.

  1. Excelente poema. Una pequeña corrección, donde dice "risadas" corresponde "rizadas".
