Pálido, descolorido, deslumbrado
por la brillantez en caída,
la cima de la colina me sostiene.
Abajo, la costa pela los dientes.

Sin aliento, quemado hasta la médula,
entre el pétreo verde del olivo
y el gris gesto de la piedra,
aturdido, bajo la vista.

¿Cómo pretender descansar
en este seco, aserrado paisaje
donde la tierra, el aire, el fuego y el agua
bruscamente exigen reverencia?

Acaso para fijar un lugar
en un mundo cambiante donde el tiempo
habla y donde demasiados seres
se entrecruzan y exigen
aprobación una y otra vez,

algún sitio decente donde morir,
algún sitio que se volviera
paisaje y vocabulario,
equilibrio, hogar.

Galilea

Bleached white, bedazzled
by the bright light falling,
the hilltop holds me up.
Bellow, the coastline bares its teeth.

Winded, burned to the bone, berween
the stony green of the olive,
the gray grimace of stone,
I look dazedly down.

How to come to rest
in this raw, whitled landscape
where earth, air, fire, and water
bluntly demand obisance?

Perhaps to fix one place
in a shifting world where time
talks and where too many selves
criss-cross and demand
enactment and re-enactment,

somewhere decent to die in,
somewhere which could become
landscape and vocabulary,
equilibrium, home.
