Russell Edson / Tres poemas

Yo no tengo ningún gato.

THE ANT FARM

In spite even of Columbus the world collapses and goes flat again.
The sky is a bell jar where a child in another scale watches his ant farm.
When the bored child yawns two thousand years pass.
Someday we have crashed to the playroom floor; the careless child knocks us over with his fire truck… All that dirt lying in its broken sky.
Swept up, it is thrown into a garbage can at the back of the universe.

COUNTING SHEEP

A scientist has a test tube full of sheep. He wonders if he should try to shrink a pasture for them.
They are like grains of rice.
He wonders if it is possible to shrink something out of existence.
He wonders if the sheep are aware of their tininess, if they have any sense of scale. Perhaps they think the test tube is a glass barn…
He wonders what he should do with them; they certainly have less meat and wool than ordinary sheep. Has he reduced their commercial value?
He wonders if they could be used as a substitute for rice, a sort of woolly rice…
He wonders if he shouldn’t rub them into a red paste between his fingers.
He wonders if they are breeding, or if any of them have died.
He puts them under a microscope, and falls asleep counting them...

THE CAT

An old man is dressed in lingerie to amuse his cat. He says, You didn’t know your papa was a lady, did you, pussycat?
Then being visited by another old man he says to the other old man, You’re probably wondering why I’m wearing lingerie.
Not at all, says the other old man.
Surely you must be curious, perhaps even a little disgusted at seeing an old man romping about in silk undies like a sex kitten.
Well now that you mention it. . . .
—Yes, let’s put everything on the table.
In that case, why in hell are you wearing women’s underwear?
  To amuse my cat.
To amuse your cat. Why didn’t you say so, that explains everything. For a moment I thought you had lost your mind. Incidentally where is your cat?
  I don’t have a cat. ...
