Stevie Smith / Dos poemas

Dios el devorador

Hay un dios en quien no creo,
mas hacia este dios mi amor se extiende;
este dios en quien no creo es
mi vida entera, mi vida y yo soy suya.

Pobre Alma, guarda silencio. En la región de la Muerte
no hay pluma, papel, noción —y no hay Tiempo.

 God the Eater

There is a god in whom I do not believe
Yet to this god my love stretches,
Thig god whom I do not believe in is
My whole life and I am his.
Everything that I have of pleasure and pain
(Of pain, of bitter pain and men's contempt)
I give this god for him to feed upon
As he is my whole life and I am his.
When I am dead I hope that he will eat
Everything that I have been and have not been
And crunch and feed upon it and grow fat
Eating my life all up as it is his.

Here Lies…

Here lies a poet who would not write
His soul runs screaming through the night,
'Oh give me paper, give me pen,
And I will very soon begin.'
Poor Soul, keep silent. In Death's clime
There is no pen, paper, notion —and no Time.
