Lawrence Ferlinghetti / Un parque de diversiones en la mente, 3

Arriesgándose constantemente hasta el absurdo

Arriesgándose constantemente hasta el absurdo
                                                               y la muerte
cada vez que actúa
                           por sobre las cabezas
                                                de su audiencia
el poeta como un acróbata
                           escala sobre la rima
el alambre alto de su propia obra
y se balancea sobre las miradas
                                            sobrepasando un mar de rostros
mide sus pasos
hasta el otro lado del día
 representa  entre líneas
y  hace  destrezas con sus pies
y otras grandes actuaciones
                            y todo  sin equivocar
nada
por  lo que no podría  ser

Porque él es el súper-realista
                                 que debe necesariamente percibir
la verdad tensa
antes de cada postura o paso
en su supuesto avance
                         hacia ese posarse más alto
donde la Belleza está y espera
                                   con gravedad
dar su definitorio  salto mortal
 Y él
                         un pequeño charleychaplin
                                  que podrá o no alcanzar
su justa forma eterna
                    águila extendida  en el vacío
de la existencia.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti (Nueva York, 1919),  A Coney Island of the Mind, New Directions, Nueva York, 1958
Traducción de Marina Kohon

Constanly Risking Absurdity

Constantly risking absurdity
                           and death
whenever he performs
                          above the heads
                                       of his audience
the poet like an acrobat
                           climbs on rime
to a high wire of his own making
and balancing on eyebeams
                                above a sea of faces
places his way
to the other side of day
performing entrechats
                         and sleight-of-foot tricks
and other high theatrics
                         and all without mistaking
any thing
for what it may not be
For he`s the super realist
                           who must perforce perceive
taut truth
before the taking of each stance or step
in his supposed advance
                           toward that still higher perch
where Beauty stands and waits
                                   with gravity
                                     to start her death-defying leap
And he
                   A little charleychaplin man
who may or may not catch
her eternal form
                   spreadeagled in the empty air
of existence.
