Wallace Stevens / Dos poemas

De la superficie de las cosas

I

En mi habitación, el mundo está más allá de mi entendimiento;

II

Desde mi balcón, examino el aire amarillo.
Leyendo donde he escrito,
“La primavera es como una beldad desvistiéndose.”

III

Y despliega allí sus telas;
Sus dos telas.

Las telarañas de tus ojos
Se sujetan a tu carne y tus huesos
Como a vigas o a hierba.

Hay filamentos de tus ojos
En la superficie del agua
Y en los bordes de la nieve.

Of the surface of things

I

In my room, the world is beyond my understanding;
But when I walk I see that it consists of three or four hills and a cloud.

II

From my balcony, I survey the yelloy air,
Reading where I have written,
“The spring is like a belle undressing.”

III

The old tree is blue.
The singer has pulled his cloak over his head.
The moon is in the folds of the cloak.

*
Theory

I am what is around me.

Women understand this.
One is not duchess
A hundred yards from a carriage.

These, then are portraits:
A black vestibule;
A hight bed sheltered by curtains.

These are merely instances.

*
Tattoo

The light is like a spider.
It crawls over the water.
It crawls over the edges of the snow.
It crawls under your eyelids
And spreads its webs there-
Its two webs.

The webs of your eyes
Are fastened
To the flesh and bones of you
As to rafters or grass.

There are filaments of your eyes
On the surface of the water
And the edges of the snow.
