William Shakespeare / Soneto 44

Si el pensamiento fuera mi sustancia
las leguas no me frenarían el paso
porque sin importarme la distancia,
me llegaría hasta vos, si fuera el caso.
No importaría, aunque mi pie distante
fuera a tierras exóticas o raras,
porque mi pensamiento en un instante
volvería no bien te recordara.
Pero me mata que no soy pensamiento
para saltar distancias si te has ido
y siendo tierra y agua mi elemento
debo esperar con quejas y gemidos.

De elementos tan lentos no recibo
más que dolor y sufrimiento vivo.

William Shakespeare (Stratford-upon-Avon, 1564-1616), Sólo vos sos vos. Los sonetos de Shakespeare en traducción rioplatense. Traducción de Miguel Angel Montezanti, Editorial de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Mar del Plata, 2011

44

If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,
Injurious distance should not stop my way;
For then despite of space I would be brought,
From limits far remote, where thou dost stay.
No matter then although my foot did stand
Upon the farthest earth removed from thee;
For nimble thought can jump both sea and land
As soon as think the place where he would be.
But ah! thought kills me that I am not thought,
To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone,
But that, so much of earth and water wrought,
I must attend time's leisure with my moan,

Receiving nought by elements so slow
But heavy tears, badges of either's woe.
