Edgar Lee Masters / De "Antología de Spoon River", 12

Franklin Jones

Si hubiera vivido otro año
podría haber terminado mi máquina de volar
y haberme hecho rico y famoso.

Franklin Jones

If i could have lived another year
I could have finished my flying machine,
And become rich and famous,
Hence it is fitting the workman
Who tried to chisel a dove for me
Made it look more like a chicken.
For what is tit all but being hatched,
And running bour the yard,
To the day of the block?
Save that a man has an angel’s brain,
And sees the ax from the first!

Trainor, the druggist

Only the chemist can tell, and not always the chemist,
What will result from compounding
Fluids or solids.
And who can tell
How men and women will interact
On each other, or what children will result?
There were Benjamin Pantier and his wife,
Good in themselves, but evil toward each other :
He oxygen, she hydrogen,
Their son, a devastating fire.
I Trainor, the druggist, a mixer of chemicals,
Killed while making an experiment,
Lived unwedded.
