Ars Poetica
As if it could save my life. And it might. /For the dead inside the hem of the earth./For the dead dismissed in cascades and scarves of ash. /Over fields and great bodies water. Or resting /On a shelf inside the bud of an urn.//For those less ash than nuggets and snippets of bone./For those not found. /For those not yet born, at rest/in the imagination’s deepest pocket with the harmless, /unstrung vertebrae of the gods. Waiting //for the lusts and the mistakes of the living /to give them form. And so to the living. /For the living. For us. With our dead and our deities. For us, /with our lips against the tiny headstones we make each time /we put our soft hands together in prayer.
