James Schuyler / Jueves

montones. No recuerdo exactamente cuántas
eran: pero bastantes. Sí, más
de las que se pueden contar. Aunque yo pude.

siendo. Sí, mi secreto.

Thursday

A summer dawn breaks over the city.
Breaks? No, it’s more as though the night
–the “dark”, we call it– drained
away into the sewers and left transpicuity.
You can see: buildings, dogs, people,
cement, etc. The summer city, where,
I suppose, someone is happy. Someone.

The other bright evening cabbing
down Fifth Avenue past the park I
saw all the leaves on all the trees
and counted them: not one by one, in
bunches. I forget precisely how many
there were: quite a few. Oh yes, more
than you could count. Not me, though.
I counted them, bunch by bunch.

As said above, it’s summer: not
my favorite season. I prefer the spring,
when the leaves bud and unfurl, or
autumn, when the leaves
color and fall. Or winter, when
the leaf-bearers stand naked,
flexing their biceps like bodybuilders
exhibiting their charms.

Then there is a fifth season,
called– but that’s my secret.
Yes, my secret, and I’m going
to keep it that way. Yes, my secret.
