Antes de los turistas llega la primavera
suavizando el aire cortante de la costa
a tiempo para la primera "invasión".
Hoy el lugar está como debió haber sido,
amable y casi hospitalario. Una chica
pasa por el Northern Counties Hotel,
llevando, apurada, una bolsa de libros,
y las puertas que estuvieron cerradas todo el invierno
contra el viento del norte y la niebla marina
están abiertas a la calle, donde una
por una las gaviotas van a mirar vidrieras
y un viejo perro lobo dormita al sol.

Mientras estoy sentado con mi diario y mi chow-mein de camarones
debajo de una foto enmarcada de Hong Kong,
el propietario del restaurant chino
permanece en la puerta como si el mundo fuera joven
observando al primer yate enarbolar una vela
—un ideograma sobre una nube marina— y la luz
del firmamento sobre las montañas de Donegal;
y silba una cancioncita, soñando con su hogar.

The chinese restaurant in Portrush
Before the holidaymakers comes the spring/ Softening the sharp air of the coast/ In time for the first 'invasion'./ Today the place is as it might have been,/ Gentle and almost hospitable. A girl/ Strides past the Northern Counties Hotel,/ Light-footed, swinging a book-bag,/ And the doors that were shut all winter/ Against the north wind and the sea-mist/ Lie open to the street, where one/ By one the gulls go window-shopping/ And an old wolfhound dozes in the sun.// While I sit with my paper and prawn chow-mein/ Under a framed photograph of Hong Kong/ The propietor of the Chinese restaurant/ Stands at the door as if the world were young/ Watching the first yacht hoist a sail —/ And ideogram on sea-cloud — and the light/ Of heaven upon the mountains of Donegal;/ And whistles a little tune, dreaming of home.
