Charles Simic / Reino tranquilo

El pájaro me observa
dormir
desde la rama de un manzano
en flor.

Un mirlo
contra el cual mi madre
acumula rocas
en los baches del camino.

***

Y entre los sauces
agua
tan clara
que hace que todos teman
mirarla.

Mi hermana dice que si bebo
de esa agua moriré.
Es por eso por lo que late el corazón:
para enturbiar el agua.

Charles Sinic (Belgrado, 1938), Classic Ballroom Dances, George Braziller, Nueva York, 1980.

PEACEFUL KINGDOM

The bird watches me
sleep
from the branch of an apple tree
in bloom.

A blackbird
against whom my mother
gathers rocks
in the ruts of the road.

***

And among the willows
water
so clear
it makes everyone afraid
to look at it.

My sister says if I drink
of that water I will die.
That's why the heart beats:
to muddy the water.
