Achy Obejas / Monte Nebo

MOUNT NEBO

This is what happened in our other life:
we stared at the grit at the bottom of the cup,
a sorceror's Rorschach that guaranteed felicity,
and we drank it, bitterness and all,
because in that other life --
the one in which we talked back to god,
convinced god to let us have both milk and honey in our cup
(the milk of our bodies, buttery kisses,
honeycomb caves perfected by stingerless bees)--
there is no pain, you see, no pain.
There is only fullness there.
I can see, I can see it from here.
